Iran Basketball Federation; Tehran: The meeting which was initiated by Iran Basketball Federation Women’s section, had all 14 foreign players and coaches around the meeting table with NOC officials and President.
Dr. Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri, President of Iran National Olympic Committee who hosted the Basketball players and coaches, highlighted: “In recent years, there has been a shift in taste among the younger generation, who are showing their interest in basketball and volleyball”.

“The presence of foreign basketball players in the Women’s Pro League has a great impact on its growth and promotion. We have a responsibility and duty to the Iranian sports family. In the Iranian culture, football is at its peak, which is followed by about 40 to 50 million Iranians, but in recent years, there has been a change in taste among the younger generation who show their interest in basketball and volleyball. Meanwhile, our volleyball is claiming the championship in Asia and the medal in the Olympics, and basketball is on the path of a serious leap and is one of the contenders who have a superior position in Asia” added the NOC President.

Dr. Ramin Tabatabaei, Basketball Federation President also appreciated the opportunity to meet the NOC President and held: “Four years ago, for the first time, we obtained a license for women basketball players to participate in international events. Given that the new federation has been operating since 2018, we tried to have good plans for the development of women’s sports. In the last 3 years, we have had about 20 overseas trips to world, Asian and West Asian competitions in the women’s section, mostly in the field of 3×3 basketball, which has led to 7 medals, including 1 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. This is the first time in the history of women’s sports and it is a turning point for the development of women’s sports in the country”.

“Fortunately, with the support of the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports and Youth, we were able to secure the Olympic quota in the men’s 5×5 basketball, and in the women’s 3×3; we still have two more chances to win the Tokyo 2020 Olympic quota for the first time. National leagues can help improve the ability of our athletes, and this is a symbol of the development of women’s sports in the country. The foreign players who play in our Women’s Pro League got to know Iran and understood the culture and people we have. We are ready to welcome the ability of all players around the world who want to operate in Iran as a safe country; in the coming years we will see more foreign players in our country’s basketball leagues” highlighted the NF President.
